When considering alternative therapy, many patients often wonder if they are the right candidate for cannabis treatment. Most people go online for answers, but the conflicting information available usually creates more confusion. Lets find out are you a candidate of Medical Cannabis?

Medical cannabis is turning into a mainstream business fast, so finding reliable research and recommendations about the conditions treatable with medical marijuana is becoming difficult. In this article, we will focus on the official recommendations from the Florida Medical Association regarding the use of cannabis for treatment.

Florida Medical Association for Medical Cannabis:

The Florida Medical Association requires that a patient has the active assistance of their physician and that the physician adds the patient to the medical marijuana use registry. The physician also must ensure that the patient has a “qualifying medical condition.”  Medical conditions that fit into this definition include:

Cancer

Epilepsy

Glaucoma

HIV

AIDS

Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD)

Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS)

Crohn’s disease

Parkinson’s disease

Multiple sclerosis (MS)

Medical conditions of the same kind or class as or comparable to those above

A terminal condition

Chronic nonmalignant pain

Other chronic or recurrent medical signs that:

Significantly inhibits a person’s ability to perform one or more primary life activities as stated in the Americans and Disabilities Act of 1990

If not relieved, may result in a serious threat to the patient’s safety, or physical or mental well-being

Medical Cannabis patients and Physicians:

Many conditions are clearly outlined, but the concluding statement usually causes confusion for medical cannabis patients and medical cannabis physicians. In essence, these last two statements give physicians the chance to offer a medical marijuana card to any patient that has improved symptoms with cannabis treatment. As well as to those who have a medical condition that has negative impacts on any area of their life.

Chief amidst the “nameless” conditions for which people desire cannabis treatment are mental health disorders. These disorders include depression, panic disorder, anxiety and bipolar. As the Florida Medical Association suggested, if any of these conditions are detrimental to the patient’s mental wellbeing, then they are suitable for cannabis treatment and can get a medical marijuana card.

That is not all about Medical Cannabis…

A close examination of the research showed that medical marijuana has been proven to be effective for treating pain, anorexia and other health conditions, but it was written that the literature on the subject is insufficient. Presently, the bulk of research has gone into the subject of neuropathic pain. This is because the current pharmacological therapy for neuropathic pain is not optimal, and cannabis treatment has proven to be effective.

Studies into cannabis treatment are still ongoing, but there have been clamors from the American College of Physicians, American Medical Associate and the National Institute of Health for in-depth studies. This is for better clarification on conditions that can be treated effectively with cannabis treatment.

In conclusion

Currently, the recommendations say that any patient with a chronic medical condition is a suitable candidate for a medical marijuana card. As results from research projects become available, any medical condition can potentially cause remarkable disability or harm, whether physical or mental, is suitable to try cannabis treatment. As usual, you should continuously consult with your primary cannabis treatment doctor once you commence treatment to monitor the effectiveness and possible side effects.
