We had the opportunity to be interviewed by Voyage Magazine in Tampa. Read Dr. Farooq’s Story here:
ColoWell America is founded on teamwork, network and family; an innovative dream built from the ground up by Dr. Shiraz Farooq – board certified Colon and Rectal Surgeon in Tampa, FL.
Dr. Shiraz Farooq has been practicing medicine and surgery in Tampa for over 10 years. His medical and surgical career began oversees, where he received multiple academic gold medals and awards for his expertise. Dr. Farooq spent five years in surgical residency as well as two years in fellowship training, including Critical Care Surgery and Colon and Rectal Surgery in New York and Ohio.
When his only brother, a cancer survivor, left him and his parents alone in the world, they united to make the ColoWell America concept a reality. While optimizing care options with holistic methods and blending modern and state-of-the-art non-surgical and surgical expertise to treat common gastrointestinal and colorectal conditions, ColoWell America became Tampa’s first premier colorectal surgical practice of it’s kind.
“I support the philosophy that a healthy gastrointestinal system is necessary for a fulfilling and happy life. We are here to help each other,” explains Dr. Farooq.
Intending to move traditional medical and surgical care in a forward-thinking direction for the 21st century, Dr. Farooq became trained & certified in plant-medicine in Florida. As a Plant Medicine Clinic, ColoWell America is a pioneer of alternative medicine clinical practices in Tampa, Florida by offering holistic and comprehensive healing plans for patients, including Plant-medicine recommendations for qualified patients and plant-based diet education.
Dr. Farooq, can you describe your practice?

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
Going from doctor to business owner has a learning curve. We had to navigate many paths that we were not familiar with and build a team that was long-term committed to our growth, as ColoWell America is a global concept. We had to team up with major insurances, create relationships to develop a community of patients, and find ways to get creative with advertising to reach people with our innovative services in a new market. And as we were planning our next move toward expansion, just after our one-year anniversary, we experienced the effects of the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic. While this has been a set back economically, we have seen the bigger picture. This year has been one of establishing new goals and re-directing our focus to help the most patients possible with the best care as we now celebrate a successful two years in practice and service.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
We have a nutrition component to our practice that we share with all patients to help them reach their goals for a holistic path to health and exercise. Many patients come to us wanting to reduce weight, eat better, and decrease their medications or replace them with natural options. Two primary resolutions we provide are: FIBER and the FIVE RITES. After myself discovering the global phenomenon of the ancient Five Tibetan Rites, I have made it a mission to share these five simple, yoga-like practices, which are done once daily, to improve vitality and longevity of life. A 50-page book by Peter Kelder: The Fountain of Youth, explains in detail how he came to know of the Tibetan exercise and how to perform each of the five steps. This knowledge in practice can change your life, giving you the opportunity to breathe, focus and work-out every part of the body in the comfort of home in 20 minutes a day. I have personally transformed with the Five Rites in combination with a plant-based diet. Which brings me to fiber, and the addition of ground flaxseed to your diet. We want all of our patients to eat ground flaxseed, just 1-2 tablespoons per day, with cereal, a shake, salad or anything you’d like. This type of fiber scrubs the colon clean and encourages the gut biome to grow health bacteria. This helps build natural immunity and moves the bowels healthily. Proper ground fiber in the diet will even promote weight loss. For my patients who adhere to this dietary supplement, they see results and proudly so. Lastly, my specialty interest in plant-based education and care gives me new experience in my field of medicine. We help patients with customized treatments plans including plant-medicine options that give improved results. This type of doctor-patient care is unique in that there are few colorectal surgeons specializing in the benefits of Alternative Medicine.
Networking and finding a mentor can have such a positive impact on one’s life and career. Any advice?
We have reached out in our community to locate organizations for networking and have had great success in finding groups of professionals who want to work together. These groups act as support for each others’ small businesses for the sake of community and economic development. We have found referrals and services alike via these organizations. Not to mention we have been educated and mentored by local business owners of all kinds.
Thank you!
